About Nelda Rocha

Student. Teacher. Parent. Grandparent. Advocate.

For nearly three decades, Nelda Rocha dedicated her career to serving students in Brownsville ISD classrooms. Today, she is running for the BISD Board of Trustees to bring classroom experience, transparency, and student-focused leadership to district decision-making.

A Lifetime Connected to BISD

Nelda’s connection to Brownsville ISD began as a student.

After graduating from Porter High School in 1986, she attended Texas Southmost College and The University of Texas at Brownsville while working as a substitute teacher.

She completed her student teaching at Vermillion Road Elementary and was hired shortly afterward to begin a career that would span nearly 30 years in BISD classrooms.

29 Years in the Classroom

Throughout her career, Nelda taught students at Faulk Elementary, Besteiro Middle School, Perkins Middle School, and Still Middle School. Working directly with students, families, and educators gave her firsthand knowledge of both the strengths and challenges facing our schools.

Serving Beyond Teaching

Supporting literacy programs and student activities beyond the classroom.

Nelda’s service extended far beyond her classroom walls. Throughout her career, she sought opportunities to support students, fellow educators, and the broader BISD community.

Why I’m Running

BISD has been part of my life for most of my life.

As a student, teacher, parent, and grandparent, I have seen our district from many different perspectives.

I am running because I believe our students deserve leaders who understand what happens in classrooms every day and who are committed to making decisions that always put students first.

“BISD saw something in me. Now it’s my turn to give back.” – Nelda Rocha
